Navigating the EU single market under GPSR
National labelling differences, certification lead times and marketplace requirements: the practical obstacles between a compliant product and a sale in the EU.

The single market was created to make trade easier, yet a manufacturer outside the EU still meets a fragmented landscape of product rules, national labelling practice and marketplace policies. The General Product Safety Regulation has raised the bar for consumer products since December 2024.
Labelling differs by country
Instructions and safety information must be in a language consumers in the target country understand. Recycling symbols and packaging rules vary between member states. GPSR adds warnings tailored to vulnerable consumer groups. A label that passes in Germany can fail in France.
Testing and certification take time
Test labs and notified bodies have lead times. Under GPSR, businesses must also report safety incidents within short deadlines. Both need to be planned before the launch date, not after.
Marketplaces enforce before authorities do
Amazon, Zalando and other platforms require the EU Responsible Person and compliance documentation before a listing goes live. In practice the platform is the first checkpoint a product meets.
What GPSR requires at a glance
- Risk assessment for the product, including foreseeable misuse.
- Safety instructions and information for consumer products.
- An EU-based Responsible Person for manufacturers outside the EU.
- Reporting of safety incidents within the set deadlines.
- Traceability information on the product or packaging.
- Penalties set by each member state, up to sales bans and recalls.
