GPSR for small businesses selling into the EU

Etsy sellers, Shopify stores and direct-to-consumer brands fall under GPSR too. What the regulation asks of small businesses and how to prepare.

The General Product Safety Regulation applies to consumer products regardless of company size. E-commerce sellers on Amazon, Shopify or WooCommerce, marketplace vendors on eBay or Etsy, direct-to-consumer brands and makers of handmade products all need to comply if they sell to consumers in the EU.

Key requirements

  • Product safety assessment for the intended use, with attention to vulnerable consumers.
  • Traceability: product origin and supply chain records.
  • Labelling: clear product labels, batch numbers, safety warnings and contact details in the language of the target market.
  • A Responsible Person in the EU for businesses established outside the EU.

How to prepare

  • Understand which obligations apply to your product category.
  • Conduct a risk assessment, especially for connected or electrical products.
  • Update labels and instructions for the EU languages you sell in.
  • Appoint a Responsible Person whose contact details appear on the product or packaging.

Why it matters

Non-compliance leads to blocked listings, fines, recalls and lost access to EU marketplaces. Compliance keeps the shop open and gives consumers a contact they can trust.
